Immerse yourself in the Las Catalinas’ Collective Impact Program with a visit to Huerta Tierra Mágica, a community farm in Tempate, the district’s capital. Tempate is a beautiful, traditional Guanacastecan town rich in culture, located twenty-five minutes from Playa Danta. The Collective Impact Program was designed to bolster local organizations committed to regenerative agriculture, sustainable tourism, and climate resistance.
Huerta Tierra Mágica farm is an organic farm dedicated to employing regenerative farming techniques, providing community members with a bountiful array of fresh fruits and vegetables in exchange for their time and effort in its fields. Regular volunteer trips help amplify the communal spirit, giving visitors a meaningful opportunity to connect with the land by clearing plant beds, planting crops, and harvesting produce, in turn, giving more support to the community farm.
Taking a trip to Huerta Tierra Mágica is a moment to connect with the simple life; taking in the sunshine, and seeing tropical fruits and vegetables grow in their natural state instead of in an industrial farm. You will meet Don Carmen, the farm manager, and he will explain the produce around the farm. If they are in season, you will help harvest yucca, tiquisque, plantain, papaya, sorrel, squash, and much more. Pollinators like birds, butterflies, and bees flutter around as you go about your tasks.
Huerta Tierra Mágica plays a crucial role in providing an under-serviced community with access to fresh produce. Being part of this effort allows you to contribute in a meaningful way, knowing that your time spent is creating a positive impact on both the environment and the local community's well-being.
This Collective Impact initiative goes beyond agricultural efforts; it also extends to enhancing the community through painting projects and assisting in the preparation of community events. One such event was the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, where stands offer locally produced items, creating a festive atmosphere. For Tempate’s next event, community members are invited to help set up the bull ring for the upcoming local fair and rodeo, also known as "fiestas." Extra hands will be invaluable, and it is an excellent opportunity to engage with the community and gain insights into the vibrant culture of Costa Rican farm life.
