Abriendo Mentes is a not-for-profit operating in the rural, coastal towns of Playa Potrero and Brasilito, two communities near Las Catalinas in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Despite the economic growth driven by tourism and foreign investment, these areas face significant challenges, including limited resources and public services, leading to marginalization, especially among women, children, and vulnerable communities. Inadequate public education, high unemployment rates, social exclusion, violence, and poverty further hinder access to economic opportunities. With children attending school for only three to four hours per day on average and no public school in Brasilito since 2012, the region is transitioning from traditional industries like fishing and farming to tourism. Abriendo Mentes addresses these issues through tailored education and community development programs, aiming to empower local communities to achieve academic, social, and professional success. By promoting individual growth, the organization seeks to uplift the entire community.
In Guanacaste, Costa Rica, the nonprofit Abriendo Mentes is making a big impact. Since 2009, they've been delivering education and social programs to rural and underserved communities. Programs range from after-school activities for children to vocational training for adults, all aimed at building skills and opportunities.
For those looking to support or get involved, Abriendo Mentes accepts volunteers in Playa Potrero and Brasilito, and donations are accepted online or in their offices. Fundraising events that supporting their projects, like this Friday, February 16, 2024, with the Craig Thatcher Band in Terrazas Flamingo, are regularly organized as well.
