Town’s Charming Pathways

Cobblestones, bricks, and tiles form the picturesque pathways and streets of Las Catalinas, and this aesthetic choice offers more than just visual appeal. These traditional materials have been intentionally selected to enhance the experience of walking through town.

Historically, brick and cobblestone roads have demonstrated remarkable durability, lasting for 150 years or more. For example, the cobblestones still in use along Rome's Appian Way are over 2,000 years old, showcasing the longevity of these materials. Additionally, their low maintenance requirements make them practical for long-term use.  Replacing individual bricks and repositioning them when necessary due to lifting sections of the street is a straightforward and uncomplicated task.

Beyond their longevity, the lighter color of these materials helps keep the ground cooler compared to darker surfaces like asphalt or concrete, important in Guanacaste’s heat. Smoothed limestone or shell cobblestones reflect sunlight more effectively, reducing heat absorption and the need for excessive air conditioning, thus promoting energy efficiency.

Moreover, the use of cobblestones, bricks, and tiles adds a unique charm to the streets of Las Catalinas. Unlike asphalt, these materials age gracefully, gaining character and beauty over time. As moss and plants naturally find their way into the crevices, the pathways become even more enchanting, offering a blend of nature and architecture.

In Las Catalinas, every step along the cobblestone pathways is a journey where functionality and aesthetics converge to create a unique atmosphere.
