Las Catalinas' Environmental and Community Commitment for 2023
At Las Catalinas, decision-making and actions are deeply rooted in core values and beliefs that serve as town’s guiding principles. While all our values find relevance in the Environmental and Community Outreach Program, two principles stand out as the driving forces behind its existence:

The Environmental Program has had some notable achievements throughout 2023 to reflect on. These accomplishments have made steps towards our commitment to environmental stewardship and Costa Rica.
Conservation Efforts IN TOWN
Las Catalinas remained free from forest fires for the entirety of 2023. This marks a milestone as the first year in town’s history without such incidents. Unlike some regions where forest fires naturally clear dead brush as part of a cyclical process, fire does not play an intrinsic role in the Guanacaste ecosystem. Surprisingly, thoughtful development within a forest can enhance conservation efforts. The multi-use trails within Las Catalinas have contributed to both the rejuvenation of the forest and the prevention of forest fires. Operating on a dual-purpose basis, these trails effectively address challenges like runoff and erosion induced by wind and rain. They serve as a drainage system and a natural structural support for the forest's intricate ecosystem.
Although there were no forest fires, the fire brigade continues to maintain over eighty kilometers of firebreaks and two thousand hectares of area within Las Catalinas and neighboring properties.
In the ongoing wildlife management and conservation endeavors this year, efforts led to the successful capture and release of over ten animals spanning a variety of species to a safer habitat. Training sessions were conducted for neighboring communities, imparting essential knowledge on wildlife conservation practices. The positive impact of these initiatives becomes evident with regular wildlife sightings throughout the community, particularly along the trails.
COMMUNITY EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES
The Environmental Program demonstrated commitment to community support by actively contributing to two local organizations; the Guanacaste Community Fund and Abriendo Mentes.
The Guanacaste Community Fund, established in 2014, has provided support to over 75 organizations benefiting communities in need. This support has translated into grants for more than 160 projects, mobilizing approximately $3.6 million in aid. Abriendo Mentes, another impactful organization, focuses on empowering individuals in rural and underserved communities in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Their mission is to equip these communities with the skills needed to seize educational and economic opportunities, fostering growth and self-sufficiency for individuals and their families.
The Environmental Program took the lead in organizing community-based activities aimed at cultivating awareness around national events, including the Annexation of Nicoya and Costa Rican Independence Day. The rich heritage of Costa Rica is magnified in town thanks to these efforts.
Conscious Infrastructure ADVANCEMENT
Out of the 472 hectares of the project, only 94 hectares have been allocated for development, dedicating 377 hectares for conservation and habitat restoration, safeguarding water resources, and promotion of alternative environmental services such as regenerative agriculture, outdoor recreation, and fostering a deeper connection with nature. The Environmental Program works on preconstruction to mitigate environmental impacts caused by development. During 2023, they focused on El Prado and the now-completed Beach Town. Some concerns they considered for these projects included the conservation of protected trees, sedimentation or soil erosion prevention, and any safety accommodation needed during the construction period of the trails. The first phase of environmental preparation for the new S4 condominium including paperwork, permitting, forest resource management, and trail preparation was completed by the Environmental Program in 2023.
Field Logistics for the Las Catalinas triathlon, including trails, signage, location, and management of first aid stations, was managed by the Environmental Program to make sure the impact on nature was reduced or eliminated. The Las Catalinas’ trail network began construction on an additional two kilometers in 2023. It is to be completed in the first quarter of 2024, giving residents and visitors more space to connect with nature.
After two years of effort, the Environmental Program has received the municipal improvement permit for the public road. This is an important advancement because Las Catalinas aims to build a community that does not exist solely within town’s borders. The goal is to interact, support, and connect with the greater area of Tempate. This road is a lifeline for the employees, suppliers, and visitors traveling between Las Catalinas, La Estancia, and Playa Portrero. Improvements to the streets will make the commute easier for all who frequent this route, improving their quality of life.
Harmony with Nature: Guiding Principles of Las Catalinas
In its essence, Las Catalinas is committed to coexisting harmoniously with nature. Town's planning and construction have been done with respect for the environment since its inception. The principles of new urbanism have steered high-density construction, with only 20% of the town's land dedicated to residences or commercial spaces, while a generous 80% is preserved for the shared enjoyment of the community and conservation efforts. This integrated approach prioritizes the well-being of the residents and the environment.
The Environmental Program serves as a tool in realizing this commitment, enabling town to proactively protect and enhance nature. Looking forward to 2024, Las Catalinas will keep principles like caring about nature and love for Costa Rica at the forefront, as these values shape the ongoing narrative of sustainability and community.
