Expect the sun to continue as we wrap up the weekend, with temperatures rising slowly to around 85 degrees at midday before a quick shower just around sunset. The clouds should clear up as we reach late evening, which will be perfect for watching the nighttime sky as the Orionid meteor shower reaches its peak.
The Orionid meteor shower is a yearly meteor shower that comes from pieces of Halley’s Comet breaking off and streaking across Earth’s atmosphere, where they burn up and can be seen as shooting stars. The Orionid actually lasts about 2 weeks, as the earth enters and then exits the trail Halley’s Comet leaves behind, but meteors are only visible in large numbers for four or five days.
What this means for viewers is that tonight around 1-2am, with the right conditions, it will be possible to see between 20 and 80 meteors an hour. Astronomers recommend finding a spot with no lights around, waiting about 20 minutes for your eyes to adjust to the darkness, and then sitting back and enjoying this beautiful cosmic light show. The beach or the rooftop of Plaza Central are great options. For more information check out this article about the meteor shower.
