On the beach side trail parallel to Paseo del Mar there are many piñuelas (Bromelia pinguin). This native plant is great for landscaping, in part because it's adapted to the area’s climate so doesn’t need to be watered during dry season. It's prickly long leaves are green almost all year round, but a couple of weeks after the first strong rainfall the base of its leaves start turning into very bright red. They are in this process now, adding colour to the beach trail and will soon start blooming. Like many hot and dry climate plants, they have an unexpectedly beautiful flower.
