In this Daily -- Challenging the Witch
A few days ago, a small crew departed from the shores of Playa Danta to head north via the water and challenge the surf at Witch's Rock, one of the world's most famous surf breaks.
The spot is best accessed from the water (with land access requiring a near four hour journey down questionable trails), and sits about an hour's trip north of Las Catalinas. Town is actually the second closest place to depart for a trip. Leaving from Playas del Coco only saves you about 20 minutes.
The rock is notable for its peculiar geological history and its ominous presence, which gave rise to local legend of a witch living on the island. Both contribute to the mystical feel of the break, which offers a worthy challenge even to the experienced surfer.
You might recognize Brian Funcik in these photos, a familiar face from town.
Due to the excellent boogie boarding waves on Playa Danta and Dantita, it can be easy to forget that we live just a short trip away from some of the world's best surf breaks.
