In this Daily -- Butterflies of Plaza Central

Costa Rica is famous for its wildlife. Las Catalinas is no different! From our little semi-secluded slice of heaven we have unbelievable access to nature. Whether it's a splash in the ocean or a walk among the trees, you're never too far from the element we seek to live in harmony beside. Visitors to Las Catalinas are often astonished by the variety of wildlife they may cross paths with. However, a few friendly Costa Rican butterflies can sometimes fly under the radar.

Flowers of Plaza Central

This morning the Malinchillos in front of Plaza Central were alive with dozens of flitting butterflies. Mostly Cloudless Sulphurs with a few Julias.

They're feasting on the nectar of these year-round blooms, and were joined briefly this morning by the big male Cinnamon Hummingbird that often patrols the area, who didn't stick around long enough to be photographed.

Despite the fact that both hummingbirds and butterflies share the same food source -- nectar -- at this time of year the two have a non-combative relationship. For now, there are many flowers in bloom around town and plenty of nectar to go around.

The interesting interactions comes between floral blooms, when limited access to nectar can create fierce competition between the two species.

For now though, these key pollinators are enjoying their meals in peace.

Nature is always on display in Las Catalinas! We are so fortunate to live in the middle of it!
