In this Daily: KLM’s New Flights to Liberia, Costa Rica
Guanacaste continues to become a more interesting place to be, and one way this can be seen is via its airport. From Liberia International Airport there are direct flights to the United States provided by Alaska Air, US Airways, American Airlines, Frontier, Delta, JetBlue, United Airlines and Spirit, with other international flights provided by Copa, Air Canada, AeroMexico, Avianca, LADE, Westjet, Sunwing, and more. Local flights are usually handled by Costa Rican airlines Sansa, Volaris Costa Rica, Green Airways, or Aerobell.
Most are North, Central, and South American airlines, which makes the arrival of KLM’s new flight from Amsterdam four times a week even more notable. With only one stop in San José, it’s now possible to take a single plane from Europe to Guanacaste and back again, making it even easier to travel between the two regions and providing a new connection to a different part of the world.
Direct flights always make travel simpler, and this new connection between Europe and Guanacaste removes a significant hurdle for travelers between the two regions. Previously, connections between these two regions went through the U.S., Canada, and other Central American countries, making for expensive ticket prices, higher risks of delays or missed flights, and the complications of an extra travel day. Now, a single plane unites the two regions.
This flight is also a signal as to the continued growth of the region of Guanacaste. Liberia Airport was first reinaugurated as an international airport in October 1995, and just 11 years later in 2006 demand for flights into the area had grown such that the tarmac was expanded to handle eight airplanes. Further growth over the next decade lead to more renovations that concluded in 2018, along with more routes and more travelers visiting into the region.
Flying between the U.S. and Guanacaste, travelers can reach destinations like Denver (DEN), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Houston (IAH), Miami (MIA), and New York (JFK). To Canada, options include Calgary (YYC), Toronto (YYZ), Montreal (YUC). There are also a variety of Central and South American destinations, with many connections through Panama City (ECP). Seasonal flights to the region comprise another significant portion of visitors to the region, entering from cities in Canada, Europe, and the U.S.
As a whole, this offers easier travel to Guanacaste, making the destination more attractive and helping drive tourism in the area, like this recent blog from Bungalow Travel describes. It also makes living here more fulfilling, with each flight representing a connection to new places around the world.
Looking forward to welcoming new visitors from Amsterdam, and taking the opportunity to explore a whole new part of the world direct from Liberia, Costa Rica.
