In this Daily: What to Expect from August Weather in Costa Rica
If you were just watching the weather, you might not have noticed the switch from July to August. Town still has the same warm summer mornings with a light ocean breeze, and the occasional afternoon shower still briefly punctuates sunny skies, bringing cool weather and freshly packed trails. The vibrantly colored sunsets thanks to the refraction of light against the moisture in the air still offer a gift of a view on most evenings, and as night falls there are just the slightest hints of cool weather.
In many ways, August will be much of the same excellent summer weather that we’ve had so far this year, with only some slight differences as the rains of September start to arrive.
What to Expect from August Weather in Costa Rica
The differences between Guanacaste and the rest of Costa Rica are most prominent in the winter, when the rain shadow effect off of the mountains in the center of the country brings the dry, steady winds that signal the shift from green season to dry season. However, during the middle of green season (June, July, and August) these differences are less pronounced.
Moving into August, it’s interesting to check historical data, which reveals that the two months are nearly identical, featuring average highs of 89F, average low temperatures of 73F, only 2 more days with rain in August, and only a negligible change of 2% humidity in August.
The one exception to these similarities is the total rainfall in August, which leaps from a July rainfall of around 52 inches to almost 82 inches in August.
What this looks like in town is a few longer showers towards the last week or so of the month, but apart from that small change (which signals the arrival of the heart rainy season), expect much of the same from August as we had in July.
The trails will be well-packed and full of life. The waters off of Playa Danta will be consistently warm and gentle. Temperatures will be pleasant, with weather as a whole moderate and mild.
