In this Daily -- Mejenga Beach Soccer This Afternoon
A clear and sunny Thursday morning ahead of us, with a breeze off of the ocean coming right around lunchtime and hanging around throughout the afternoon to help lower temperatures a bit. The tide will be high at 1:41pm today, falling off as afternoon wears on and leaving lots of beach available to play some Mejenga Beach Soccer today!
Like in many soccer-loving countries around the world, you don't need to go far to find a soccer game in Guanacaste. There's a public soccer field down in Potrero, impromptu games held on an old baseball diamond in Surfside, friendlies in Brasilito, and more formal tournament games held at the turf fields in Huacas, Santa Rosa, Villareal, and beyond.
Not to mention beach soccer! Thanks to the wide and flat beaches of Potrero, Danta, Dantita, Flamingo, and beyond, there's always room for a friendly game between friends. The word "Mejenga", for which this afternoon's event is named, is actually just an informal slang term for a friendly game. These Mejenga matches can be thrown together anywhere and everywhere, from the streets to back alleyways to open fields and courtyards, and are especially fun on the beach, where the unpredictability of the sand helps level the playing field so that players of all skill levels and experience can enjoy.
