Las Catalinas is a place where the natural world feels as much a part of daily life as the sea breeze and the sunlit streets. Recently, a series of remarkable animal sightings in and around our town has reminded us of the vibrant ecosystem we are so fortunate to call home. These awe-inspiring moments, shared by observant neighbors, speak to the beauty of life’s cycles and our connection to the world around us.
Imagine looking out over the sparkling waters of the Pacific, only to see the majestic spray of a whale surfacing nearby. That’s exactly what some lucky neighbors experienced last week as a whale graced the bay with its presence. This sighting was particularly surprising, as it occurred outside the typical whale-watching seasons in Costa Rica, which are generally from July to November.
While exploring the lush trails that weave through the hills of Las Catalinas, our Amid Juevones crew—the Thursday biking club—came across an enchanting sight: a baby deer.
Yesterday, another neighbor reported a thrilling sight: a deer gracefully running along the beach. Watching this elegant creature move across the sand, framed by the ocean’s expanse, was a moment of pure, natural beauty.
Closer to the heart of town, a hummingbird has built its tiny, intricate nest—a testament to the marvels of nature’s architecture. This sighting is not just a rare treat for those who noticed it but also a beautiful symbol of life’s resilience and creativity, quietly unfolding amid the bustling human activity.
On the trails, a sharp-eyed neighbor spotted an incredible example of nature’s camouflage: a stick insect, also known as a walking stick. Blending seamlessly with the branches around it.
In Las Catalinas, we live not as separate observers of nature but as participants in its ongoing story. These moments serve as a gentle nudge to cherish the cyclical patterns of life.
