Last Thursday one of our residents spotted a white-tailed deer on the trails. Even better, he had his camera ready, so we get to share this moment with you.
White-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) are the national symbol of Costa Rica’s wildlife, and we are fortunate to be in a place where they are relatively easy to see. They thrive in dry forests or open lands, favoring areas with access to water and vegetation for food. These conditions are exactly what our reserve provides, which is why it’s possible to encounter them here in Town, especially out on the trails.
They are gentle, timid creatures that usually run off quickly at the sound of people approaching, which makes it even more special to have captured this on video, where you can see the deer crossing right in front of the bike, directly across the trail.
Deer are crepuscular animals, which is why they're seen during evenings, but the experience never loses its magic. Other homeowners frequently spot armadillos, owls, and anteaters are frequently spotted as well. Just last week, a homeowner shared a video of an anteater perched high in a tree.
We hope you get to see them too. Each encounter is a gift, and a reminder of the richness and vitality our treasured reserve holds.
