Trade Winds Sweeping Town

The robust winds sweeping through Las Catalinas since late December are known as "vientos alisios" or trade winds. These winds, arriving from the ocean, usher in a refreshing breeze that extends across the country. Presently, Guanacaste is encountering vigorous gusts, with average winds reaching speeds of up to 31.2 kilometers (about 19.39 mi) per hour. However, just days ago in La Cruz, Guanacaste, the strongest gusts had speeds of 91 kilometers (about 56.54 mi) per hour.

It is intriguing to observe that some of the coldest temperatures in Costa Rica are recorded during the early dry season, often referred to as "summer." With temperatures hovering in the mid-30s Celsius or 90s Fahrenheit, a touch of coolness from the trade winds is indeed welcomed. Weather in the tropics is a phenomenon of solar radiation and air circulation. Intense heat at the equator puts air in motion, and a worldwide pattern of winds is established. Costa Rica's northeasterly trade winds are the most famous example of this. These winds blow with considerable force from December to March and April and are responsible for carrying moisture in the form of mists to the slopes of the Tilarán mountain range. These mists are what sustain the country’s magnificent cloud forest ecosystem.

While the wind currently offers a refreshing break from the Guanacaste heat, consider its impact on activities in Las Catalinas. Individuals hiking or biking on town’s trails should exercise caution due to the possibility of falling branches. Body surfing and boogie boarding may be a bit more challenging, especially for children or weaker swimmers, and it is advisable to check sailing conditions before embarking on such activities.

The trade winds have been working their magic, sweeping away the clouds and gracing us with breathtakingly clear skies and mesmerizing sunsets. Talented photographer Julio Chavarria has skillfully captured this natural beauty. Don't miss out on this awe-inspiring spectacle - step outside and witness the enchanting sunset for yourself.
