Watching the Storm Roll In from the Trails

Over the past two weeks, the rainy season made its official arrival in our corner of Guanacaste, a moment to celebrate for all the rain lovers in Town.

Right on Earth Day, we experienced what felt like the first real rain of the season. As we shared in a previous edition of The Daily, it felt symbolic in a way, even though a couple of light showers had already passed through during Easter week. But toward the end of the second to last week of April, things shifted, and we had our first true rainy and stormy day: thunder rolling in the distance, heavy gray clouds gathering over the hills, and rain pouring steadily from around 5 p.m. onward.

That same Thursday, some residents and visitors were out on the trails just as the storm began to form. From McHenry Peak, they had a clear view of lightning striking in the distance, a powerful reminder of how quickly conditions can change in the hills. They made their way back down swiftly, caught a bit by surprise, but safely returned to Town, bringing with them incredible photos and videos of what it feels like to witness a storm building while out on the trails.

There is something striking about watching a storm take shape like that.the thunder moving across the hills, the scale of the clouds. The moment right before the rain begins to fall.

Even after weeks of sun, this is a welcome shift. Rain is part of the natural cycle here, and with it comes a change you can start to see almost immediately. As the season settles in, the landscape begins to soften and turn green again, and the trails take on a different character that many mountain bikers are excited to enjoy.

Whether it’s a slower afternoon indoors, a walk right after the rain, or getting back out on the trails once the ground settles, this time of year always brings new ways to enjoy Town. We hope you find yours.
