April 20th, marked the first day that Costa Rica enforced its ban on single-use plastics, a law that was approved back in 2021. This significant step forward eliminates materials such as straws, plates, and cups that are quickly discarded. At Las Catalinas, we have been actively participating in the reduction of single-use plastic, and we applaud the country’s efforts and commitment to reducing plastic consumption. According to data from the Ministry of Health, Costa Rica produces approximately sixty tons of waste of this material per day.
The new law prohibits the commercialization and free delivery of single-use plastic straws throughout the country. It also bans the commercialization and free delivery of plastic bags to the final consumer in supermarkets and commercial establishments whose purpose is to carry goods to their final destination. Some supermarkets have already been charging for plastic bags, or have made the switch to paper bags, like Copper & Stone.
The ban covers a wide range of items used for eating, such as disposable plates, cups, forks, knives, spoons, straws, and stirrers. Additionally, importers, producers, marketers, and distributors of single-use plastic bottles, or products packaged in such bottles, must meet specific requirements. These requirements include using a certain percentage of recycled resin, implementing effective waste recovery and recycling programs, participating in integrated waste management initiatives, developing products and packaging that minimize waste, and forming strategic partnerships with municipalities to improve waste collection and management systems. Plastic bags do have exceptions for use, including reused bags, or small (45×60 cm) and medium (52×68 cm) sized biodegradable bags. The law prohibits new acquisitions or purchases of single-use plastic articles by all public administration institutions, public companies, and municipalities.
Here are a few suggestions of ways to be prepared for the single-use plastic ban:
Invest in reusable fabric shopping bags. They are durable, eco-friendly, and perfect for carrying groceries or souvenirs from local markets.
Carry a reusable straw and cutlery with you. Opt for stainless steel or bamboo options that are easy to clean and reuse.
Fill up your water bottle anywhere in town.
