Word around Town has it that plenty of new sounds have been rising from Plaza Lucía over the past few days.
Every afternoon, especially around four, a lively group of parakeets gathers in the large tree at the plaza. Their calls are impossible to miss and for a moment the entire space fills with their bright and energetic sound.
The parakeets most often seen here are the Red fronted Parakeets (Psittacara finschi). They are present in Town throughout the year, but during this season their numbers rise and their activity becomes more noticeable as they are currently searching for potential mates.
Their diet is wide and varied. They feed on capulines, the tender shoots of poro poro, raspaguacal and many other fruits and seeds. This diversity helps them adapt easily to different environments and makes Plaza Lucía, with its central Ceiba and the surrounding trees, an appealing stop along their daily route.
For now their visits continue, bringing color and sound to the plaza as the day transitions into evening.
