Las Catalinas Islands to Las Catalinas Open Waters Relay Recap

This past August 20, early on a sunny morning, a group of residents and friends gathered at Playa Danta to take part in what is likely the first-ever Las Islas Catalinas to Las Catalinas Open Waters Relay. The idea came from Doug, who led the way into the ocean as the relay began.

The story actually started almost a year ago, during last October’s Homeowners Weekend. While at a residents’ gathering at the Beach Club, Doug shared the idea with Charles, who immediately said he was in. Soon after, they recruited another swimmer, and before long the group had grown to around ten participants.

They planned everything carefully, holding a safety meeting the night before to review the protocol and ensure everyone felt confident in the water. During the relay, there was always someone on watch while another swam, creating a smooth and safe experience for everyone involved.

The team of about ten set out around 7:30 a.m. on a bright, sunny morning, cheered on by friends and family gathered at Playa Danta. From there, they swam out to the deck, where a boat was waiting to take them to the Catalinas Islands, which was the official starting point of the relay. Doug, who came up with the idea, took the first strokes to begin the journey.

As they approached the deck again toward the end of the relay, all swimmers jumped back into the water to complete the final stretch together. Once they reached the deck, they waited for the rest of the team, and then everyone dove in once more for the last swim back to Playa Danta, returning triumphantly to Las Catalinas, greeted by friends and family cheering from the shore.

The swim began with a bit of a rocky start, especially around the Catalinas Islands, where Doug mentioned they encountered plenty of fish. Soon after, the ocean turned calm and the conditions became ideal. At one point, they even spotted two turtles mating near the surface. A funny and memorable moment in the middle of the crossing.

If you missed it, here’s a recap of that amazing day!

After the relay, the group celebrated with burgers and big smiles, proudly wearing their “Las Islas Catalinas to Las Catalinas Open Waters Relay” shirts. Town was buzzing with visitors for the XTERRA weekend and the mid-term school break, creating the perfect backdrop for a joyful morning by the sea.
