Yesterday, we took a deeper look at Costa Rica’s ₡1,000 colones bill, which features Braulio Carrillo Colina, Head of State during two periods in the 19th century who helped consolidate the institutional foundation of the Costa Rica we know today. The bill also honors two national symbols: the Guanacaste tree and the white-tailed deer. Today, we bring that symbol to life.
Last year, we were fortunate to witness a very special sighting at Playa Danta. Early one morning, a photographer visitng Town was walking along the shoreline carrying her equipment when, unexpectedly, a white tailed deer appeared running along the coast.

In a matter of seconds, she lifted her camera and captured the scene. The result is a remarkable image of a national symbol moving freely across the sand, framed by the sea and morning light.
We have seen white tailed deer many times along the trails and even along the road on the way to Town. But witnessing one running along the beach is something truly special, a moment we do not take lightly.

We are grateful to Meredith White for capturing this incredible moment and sharing it with us. It is a reminder that the symbols printed on our currency are not distant illustrations. They are living beings, present in the landscapes that surround us. Let us reminisce together and continue caring for the nature we are fortunate to have so close.
