The Spirit of Play in Las Catalinas

Take a walk down memory lane and imagine the days when children roamed freely, playing outside until the streetlights flickered on. For Charles Brewer, Las Catalinas’ founder, this nostalgic childhood vision inspired a mission to recreate that sense of freedom in the modern world. In 2011, Brewer brought this dream to life with Las Catalinas' development.

Play is essential for more than just fun – it is an aspect of child development, fostering resilience, social skills, and creativity. Play allows children to navigate challenges, build friendships, and learn valuable life lessons in a way that no classroom can replicate. However, in many modern neighborhoods, the freedom to play has been hindered by busy streets and safety concerns. Brewer recognized this and sought to create a space where children could roam without restrictions. In Las Catalinas, car-free streets and a supportive community ethos encourage kids to explore, imagine, and play freely.

Bringing back play is not a dream for Las Catalinas, it is a goal that can be achieved anywhere. By organizing block parties, creating designated play areas, or starting play clubs, communities can work together to prioritize children's playtime and reclaim the joy of unstructured play.  At Las Catalinas, the sight of children racing through the streets serves as a reminder of the magic that happens when kids are given the freedom to play. We hope the world follows Las Catalinas and Brewer's lead and ensures that play remains a cherished part of childhood – wherever we may live.

So let's embrace the spirit of play, and create environments where children can be just that, children. Read more on freedom for play in Charles Brewer’s interview for Free Range Kids here.
