As we move deeper into the dry season in Guanacaste, the landscape around Town begins to change in ways that are easy to notice. Many of the trees in the hills have shed their leaves, opening up the canopy and letting the sun shine more directly onto the trails and streets.
The result is beautiful golden scenery, but also a season with noticeably less shade. Whether you are walking through Town or exploring the trails, the sun can feel especially strong during the middle hours of the day. Unless you head out early in the morning or closer to sunset, you will likely feel the warmth a little more than usual.
With that in mind, we wanted to share a few friendly tips to help you enjoy your walks comfortably during these sunny weeks.
First, hydration matters more than we sometimes think. Water is essential, but adding electrolytes can make a big difference, especially if you are spending time outdoors. When we sweat, we lose minerals as well as fluids, so replenishing both helps your body stay balanced.
Sun protection for the face can also go beyond the usual sunscreen. We recommend checking sunscreen sticks, as they make it easy to reapply quickly during a walk or after a swim. For the rest of the body, clothing can serve as the first layer of protection before sunscreen. Breathable hats with UV protection, lightweight long sleeve shirts designed for sun exposure, and even swimwear with built in UV fabric are great options if you plan to be out for a while.
Footwear is another small detail that helps. Sandals made of leather or fabric materials tend to stay cooler than rubber or plastic under direct sun, which can make longer walks much more comfortable. For your four legged friend, it is also also helpful to check the temperature of the pavement before heading out. A common rule is placing the back of your hand on the asphalt or pavers for a few seconds. If it feels too hot for your hand, it will likely be uncomfortable for your dog paws as well. Bringing a small bowl and extra water for them can also help keep them hydrated along the way. In particularly warm days, some pet owners also carry electrolyte or rehydration solutions designed specifically for dogs. As a refreshing treat after a walk, small pieces of watermelon without seeds can also be a hydrating snack many dogs enjoy.
And here is a fun little secret if you want to develop a natural sunkissed glow. Foods rich in beta carotene such as papaya, carrots, and mangoes can subtly enhance your skin’s warm tone over time. Combined with sunscreen and healthy sun exposure, it is a simple way to let the dry season work in your favor.
The dry forest has its own seasonality, and although the trails may look a bit lighter as the canopy becomes more sparse, it simply invites us to readjust the timing of our hikes or beach visits. With a few thoughtful habits, it remains a wonderful season to explore, walk, and enjoy the outdoors in Town.
