At Las Catalinas, we are immensely proud of the trail system that has become a defining feature of town. The positive feedback we've received from both our community and visitors over the years has been a true testament to the vision and dedication that went into its creation. Seeing the trails recognized as worthy of hosting a world-class event like XTERRA 2024 is a milestone that reflects the collaborative efforts that have shaped this project.
Since 2009, Las Catalinas has been focused on developing a world-class mountain bike trail system that complements our vision of a vibrant, walkable town surrounded by the natural beauty of both land and sea. This achievement would not have been possible without the expertise and hard work of the Agroforestales Team, who have been instrumental in transforming ecologically sensitive areas of our property into a five-star resort adventure amenity. Their work has allowed us to integrate outdoor recreation, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle into an exciting experience that is deeply connected to the natural surroundings.
The trail system at Las Catalinas is designed to embody the Costa Rican ideal: rustic, authentic, and in harmony with the tropical landscape. With features like wooden bridges, gazebos, and native plant species, the trails offer a unique experience that highlights the beauty of the region. Beyond recreation, the trail system also plays a crucial role in the transportation network of Las Catalinas, providing connectivity and access to a variety of resort amenities and destinations, including beaches, the beach club, spa and fitness facilities, restaurants, and residences.
Our trail system comprises nine multipurpose trails (for both mountain biking and hiking) and five hiking trails exclusive to pedestrians. Thanks to the innovative application of the stacked loop concept by the Agroforestales Team, we've created a network that includes six loops, two downhills, one connector, and various internal and external roads, all interacting as a web of independent yet complementary sections. This design allows users to easily adjust the distance and difficulty of their trips by adding loops or sections to their route.
Flexibility is key to our trail system's design, with trails that can be used clockwise or counterclockwise and still function seamlessly. This adaptability ensures that the trail remains an endless track for extreme users, with unlimited distance. In case of an event or emergency, certain sections can be closed without disrupting the overall experience.
All signage within the trail system, designed and handcrafted by the Agroforestales Team, is minimalistic, using a basic alphanumeric color code. The bright colors are consistent with those on the Trail System Map, and markers are strategically placed to make navigation simple. These markers serve as pseudo-coordinates, making it easy for users to find their way.
We recognize the significant value that the trail system brings to the Las Catalinas community. This unique amenity has helped establish a distinct identity for our town, offering an experience that sets us apart from any other destination. We are deeply grateful to the Agroforestales Team for their continued efforts in maintaining and expanding our trail system, ensuring that it remains a source of pride and enjoyment for all.
