This week there have been large flocks of Frigate birds either flying very, very high, or flying low over the Pitaya islands.

There might be more seabirds around because change in water temperature brings a lot of nutrients up to the surface, which attracts small baitfish which birds feed on, but also Costa Rica is part of many species’ migration routes.

Though relatively small in size, Costa Rica is home to one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world. Throughout the country there are 920 different species of birds.

Fantastic birdwatching is possible during the whole year, but is even better during the migration seasons: the Autumn migration from North America to South America (Aug-Dec) and the Winter migration, when the birds return to the North (Jan-May).
