In this Daily: Multigenerational Family Travel Over Mother’s Day Weekend

It’s Día de la Madre weekend in town, which brings with it a number of families coming in for a quick fin de semana getaway, especially from San Jose. With the national holiday on Thursday, a few families have also taken off Friday for an extra-long weekend to celebrate.

Las Catalinas has a few factors that make it particularly well-suited to big families. The beauty of the Guanacaste coast, town’s diverse activities, safe and walkable streets, and large homes that offer both personal and social spaces combine to create an ideal location for grandparents, parents, and children all traveling together.

Multigenerational Family Travel in Las Catalinas

For a quick weekend getaway, many big families travel from San Jose to Guanacaste to spend time at the beach. It’s a relatively low-hassle travel day (a 3.5-4 hour drive or a 45 minute plane flight), to a destination that to many ticos feels familiar and special.

There are some particular reasons these families pick Las Catalinas as their Guanacaste travel destination. For families with three (or more) generations traveling together, the larger homes in town provide a chance for the whole family to stay in one place. Compared to staying in a hotel, or in separate homes, homes create a greater sense of belonging, like the space is truly theirs.  With bedrooms generally spread across these homes, everyone can have spaces to themselves to play or relax, while social spaces like pools, dining rooms, and terraces bring the whole family together.

Outside of the home, the unique benefits of town’s walkability and location take prominence. Car-free streets mean that kids and cousins can play and explore freely. Easily accessible beaches, gentle mountain biking trails, and numerous shops and restaurants offer activities for the family to be together, and town’s density means that even when pursuing separate activities families are often only steps away from one another.

Add in special events that especially suit big families, like custom in-home dinners from town’s expert chefs, or tomorrow’s special edition Día de la Madre brunch, and you have a trip that offers a way for family from all generations to relax at the beach and spend time together.

Enjoy the weekend.
