Coming Up in the Experiences Program: From Wood to Brew

The Athletics & Activities Team has been working on new ways to enrich the time guests spend in Las Catalinas, adding experiences that invite them to try something new while also getting a closer look at Costa Rican culture.

One of the latest additions begins with something deeply familiar to Costa Ricans: coffee. More specifically, it introduces guests to the chorreador, the traditional wooden coffee maker that has long been part of everyday coffee preparation in Costa Rican homes. Ground coffee is placed inside a reusable cloth bag suspended from the wooden stand, and hot water is slowly poured through it, allowing the freshly brewed coffee to drip into the cup below.

The new experience, called From Wood to Brew, takes that tradition one step further by inviting participants to make it their own. During the activity, guests receive the materials needed to assemble and decorate their own chorreador, creating something they can use during their stay and eventually take home as a reminder of a distinctly Costa Rican tradition.

The activity has already been offered on a trial basis with a very positive response and, beginning in the third week of August, it will become a regular part of the Experiences Program. Designed for families, couples and solo travelers, the activity can be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

From Wood to Brew is one of several experiences being developed as part of the weekly Experiences Program available to guests staying through Las Catalinas Doorway, Santarena Hotel and Casa Chameleon. Throughout the week, the calendar can include exercise and sports classes, walks, artistic activities, and culinary and gastronomic experiences.

Together, these activities give guests another way to experience their time here, expanding beyond what they may have already planned for their stay and creating opportunities to learn, make, taste and participate in something they may not have anticipated discovering along the way.
