Costa Rica marks a significant milestone this year with the 200th anniversary of the Annexation of the Nicoya Party. This historic event, commemorated on July 25, 1824, reflects the profound decision of Nicoya's inhabitants to unite with Costa Rica, shaping the nation's geographical and cultural landscape.
The Casa de la Cultura of Nicoya has announced an exciting lineup of events to celebrate this bicentennial. Vice-Minister of Culture, Vera Beatriz Vargas León, and Nicoya's Mayor, Carlos Armando Martínez Arias, shared details of the festivities, which promise a vibrant pampera party atmosphere.
From July 20 to 28, the "Cultural Festival of the Bicentennial of the Annexation of the Nicoya Party to Costa Rica" will take place at the Colonial Church square. This free event will showcase Guanacaste's rich cultural heritage through concerts, folk dance performances, fairs, exhibitions, and much more.
Visitors can enjoy performances by renowned groups such as Malpaís, Marimba Orquesta La Maribel, and Los Golobios, along with traditional dance troupes like La Gran Nicoya, Ojoche, Flor de Caña, and Alma Taloligueña. The festival will culminate on July 28 with a spectacular fireworks display and dance concert.
The Ministry of Culture and Youth (MCJD) will also host various events across Guanacaste and the entire country. A highlight includes a grand concert by the seven Beneméritas Concert Bands on July 25 at 5 p.m. in Nicoya's Colonial Temple square.
On July 29, a literary recital featuring Guanacaste authors, lectures, and conversations on Guanacaste's cultural legacy will take place. This will be followed by a meeting of marching bands from Nicoya and San José along Central Avenue, and an official ceremony at the National Theater of Costa Rica.
On July 30, the celebrations continue with the planting of the Guanacaste Bicentennial Annexation Tree and the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at Metropolitan Park La Sabana. The festivities will include a parade and conclude with the Bicentennial Festival at the Melico Salazar Popular Theater.
This bicentennial celebration is a testament to Costa Rica's rich history and cultural diversity, honoring the significant decision made 200 years ago by the people of Nicoya to join this beautiful nation.
