Brisa Hennessy: A Costa Rican Dream of Olympic Gold

Costa Rica's pride, Brisa Hennessy, is riding the waves of success and making an entire nation dream of Olympic gold. Born on September 16, 1999, in the picturesque Osa Peninsula, Brisa's journey with surfing began at the tender age of three, inspired by her parents who ran a surf school. Her natural talent and dedication quickly propelled her to the world stage, making history as the first Costa Rican to qualify for the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour in 2018 at just 18 years old.

Brisa's rise to prominence continued with remarkable achievements, including a third-place finish at the WSL Corona Bali Protected event in 2019 and seven Top 10 finishes that same year. Her outstanding performance on the WSL Championship Tour earned her a spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where surfing made its debut as an Olympic sport. 

Now, Brisa Hennessy is making waves at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, capturing the hearts of Costa Ricans with her inspiring performances. In her qualifying heat, Brisa showcased her exceptional skills, earning a score of 15.56, one of the top five highest scores, with her first wave scoring an impressive 8.33. As she advances to the third round, Brisa faces Yolanda Hopkins from Portugal, with the dream of reaching the quarterfinals, semifinals, and ultimately, the medal competition.

Costa Rica has only won one Olympic gold medal in its history, achieved by swimmer Claudia Poll in 1996. Brisa Hennessy stands on the brink of making history once more, with the possibility of becoming only the second Costa Rican to win Olympic gold.
