Blooming Violets to Say Goodbye to the Dry Season in Las Catalinas

If you have walked along Paseo Palmeras or entered the trails near the entrance across from the Municipal Parking, you may have noticed small bright violet flowers falling gently from the treetops and their petals scattered on the ground.

These flowers belong to Bignonia neoheterophylla, a climbing vine perfectly adapted to our climate as it thrives in full sun. Unlike many trees that bloom during the dry season in March or April, this vine flowers at the very end of the dry season. That is why we can enjoy its peak bloom right now, as the rainy season approaches.

The trumpet-shaped flowers remind one of Costa Rica’s national flower, the Guaria Morada, because of their vibrant violet color. However, the Guaria Morada is quite different botanically and is not a vine like this species.

We invite you to take a walk along Paseo Palmeras or explore the trails and look up. We are sure you will love seeing these delicate violet flowers adorning our green spaces.
