Before Sunset: A Look at the Moonset in Town

In Las Catalinas, sunsets over the ocean are part of a familiar ritual. People gather, pause, take photos, and watch as the sun slowly disappears into the horizon, leaving the sky painted in warm colors.

But over the past few full moons, another view has been catching people’s attention in Town.

Late at night and in the very early hours of the morning, the moon has looked especially striking as it appears over Town and slowly sets above the ocean. It is a different kind of view from the sunset, and one that is usually reserved for those who are awake before most of Town begins to move.

Residents are often the ones most familiar with these early morning scenes, and recently, some have been sharing incredible photos taken from different points in Town. They kindly gave us permission to use them for this edition of The Daily.

The photo below, taken by Lauren, shows the moon resting in the same place where we would normally watch the sun set, its reflection glowing softly across the ocean.

This other photo, taken by Gonzalo from Los Altos at 4 a.m., captures the moon sitting between the two little islands in front of Playa Danta, with the lights of Town glowing below. A spectacle reserved for those awake before sunrise.

Adrian captured another beautiful view, with the moon high above, casting its light over the homes below.

With the moon hanging over the rooftops, the ocean below, and soft light gathering along the horizon, the view feels both rare and unforgettable. We are grateful to our community and neighbors for noticing, appreciating, and capturing these beautiful moments in Town. It is a quieter spectacle than sunset, but just as captivating for those who witness it.
