A Spotted Skunk Rescue at Papagayo Brewery

Last Wednesday brought two special rescues in Town. The sweetest one took place at Plaza Mercado, when a mofeta punteada or spotted skunk was found inside one of the trash bins at Papagayo Brewery.

It’s believed the little skunk fell in while foraging for food with its family and wasn’t able to climb back out. Our Environmental Director and Agroforestry team carried out the rescue, which turned out to be quick and simple, though it came with the small challenge of enduring its strong scent. Despite its adorable face and beautiful fur, when feeling threatened these animals release a powerful odor, just like their close relatives, the common skunks.

These little animals tend to move in small family groups, and this one was found healthy and uninjured, so it was released near the creek by the public access, where it might find its family foraging nearby.

We like to think that somewhere out there, this skunk has already found its way back home, and that our little visitor got a happy ending after its small adventure.
