A couple of weeks ago, something incredible happened in Playa Potrero, just about 4 km from Town. A sea lion appeared swimming calmly through the water, moving through the bay in a way that surprised everyone who was lucky enough to see it.
The video was shared by a local Guanacaste news outlet, and soon after, other people reported seeing what appeared to be the same sea lion near Playa Flamingo. From those sightings, it seems the animal continued moving along the coast, passing through nearby waters and giving this part of Guanacaste a very rare visit.

Sea lions are marine mammals usually associated with cooler or temperate waters, rocky coastlines, sandy beaches, islands, and offshore areas where they can rest, hunt, and move between land and sea. Some species live along the North Pacific, while others are found farther south, including around the Galápagos Islands and parts of Ecuador’s coast.
Costa Rica’s Pacific coast is full of marine life, from sea turtles and rays to dolphins and migrating whales, but sea lions are not part of the usual coastal scene here. They are not impossible to see, and Costa Rica has had a few unusual sightings over the years, but Guanacaste is far from their common habitat. That is what made this moment so rare and special.
After the sighting in Playa Flamingo, no further reports were shared, so it is believed the animal may have continued its journey farther offshore. For now, its brief visit remains one of those rare coastal surprises that people will remember for a long time.
The ocean surprised us with an unexpected visitor, giving a few lucky people the chance to encounter a marine mammal rarely seen in this part of Costa Rica. It was a small, beautiful glimpse of how much life moves through these waters, sometimes quietly, sometimes unexpectedly, and sometimes just close enough to shore to become a story for the whole community.
