A Rare Porcupine Sighting Near Center of Joy

Last week, a Mexican hairy dwarf porcupine was spotted in one of the gardens just outside Center of Joy. An owner noticed the animal and shared how fascinating it was to watch, especially as it used its tail much like a monkey would, helping it balance and move through its surroundings.

The Mexican hairy dwarf porcupine, also known as Sphiggurus mexicanus, is a small, tree dwelling porcupine native to parts of Central America and southern Mexico. It is primarily nocturnal and spends most of its time in the forest canopy, where its prehensile tail plays a key role in climbing and navigating branches. Its soft, hair like fur partially covers its quills, which gives it a distinctive and less spiky appearance.

According to Town’s Environmental Director, the last recorded sighting of this species in the area was about ten years ago, near the nursery. Seeing one again in this zone is a true joy and a hopeful sign of the health and connectivity of the surrounding ecosystems.
