Yesterday afternoon around 4 pm, two of our team members came across a small parakeet in need of help.
The little bird, commonly named Zapoyolito (Brotogeris jugularis), could not fly, but a quick check showed no visible injuries. He was gently placed in a box, given food, and kept safe under observation through the night.
This morning, they tried releasing the parakeet to see if it could return to its family, but it still could not flap its wings well enough to take off. So, it was gently taken to the Apami Rescue Center in Portegolpe, Santa Cruz, where it will receive professional care. If our little friend recovers, it could one day be released back in Town, right where it was first found. If not, it may find a permanent home at Apami, becoming an ambassador for environmental education and a reminder of the care and kindness that nature often needs from us.
Zapoyolito is a Pacific parakeet found from southern Mexico through Central America to Colombia and Venezuela. Its bright green feathers are adorned with coppery tones on the wing coverts, blue shades on the primaries and remiges, a pale blue crown, and an orange chin. This species is listed as threatened in Mexico and, while it is not at high risk of extinction worldwide, local populations can still face challenges. That is why it was so important for us to do whatever we could to help.
We are grateful that the parakeet was found here, where we are honored to help provide the attention and support he needs. We truly value nature, and it is a privilege to play even a small part in the preservation of species like his.
