A Community Effort to Rescue the Playa Danta Platform

This past weekend brought some of the rainiest days we have seen so far this rainy season. According to the National Meteorological Institute, the Intertropical Convergence Zone was positioned over Costa Rica, creating unstable conditions, heavy rain, and stronger ocean movement along parts of the Pacific coast.

By Sunday afternoon, the rain had intensified around Town. Around 4 p.m., residents, neighbors and members of the Pura Vida Ride team, noticed that the floating platform at Playa Danta had come loose and was drifting close to shore, moving in the direction of Playa Dantita.

Waves are not common in Playa Danta or Playa Dantita, which are usually known for their calm waters. However, that afternoon, the surf began forming near the area where the platform is normally anchored. The Pura Vida Ride team believes the unusual movement of the ocean may have placed extra tension on the rope, eventually causing it to break loose.

What followed was a true community effort. More than ten people, including Pura Vida Ride staff, residents, Las Catalinas homeowners, and members of the Agroforestry team, came together to help bring the platform safely out of the water.

Once it reached shore, the residents, neighbours and PVR members helped out used logs to help move it across the sand and secured it to nearby trees, making sure it would not drift away again.

For most people who have spent time at Playa Danta, the platform is more than a floating structure. It is a familiar landmark in the bay, a meeting point, a reference for swimmers, and a favorite place to rest, jump in, or simply enjoy time in the water. It is one of those small but beloved elements that has become part of the Playa Danta experience.

The platform still needs to be repaired before it can float again, so for now, it has remained safely tied near shore and will be returned to its place in the ocean once it has been repaired and sea conditions allow. Until then, we are grateful to everyone who stepped in to help bring it back safely, protecting a beloved piece of Town and Playa Danta that so many people know and love.
