In this Daily: Día de la Madre (Costa Rican Mother’s Day) and the Week Ahead

The notable event for this week is Día de la Madre, the Costa Rican holiday and celebration of mothers. Officially, the holiday takes place on Thursday, August 15th and includes a federal day off of work, but families will continue to celebrate into the weekend across the country. In town, Santarena will offer Día de la Madre Brunch in the Conservatory on Saturday at 10am, which is a few steps further than breakfast in bed, but well worth the walk thanks to Santarena’s culinary team.

Día de la Madre (Costa Rican Mother’s Day) and the Week Ahead

Mother’s Day, or similar variations, are celebrated throughout the world at very different times ranging from February to October, each drawing from its nation’s unique cultural history. In Costa Rica, Día de la Madre is celebrated on August 15th, which coincides with the Feast of the Assumption of Virgin Mary who is seen as the pinnacle example of motherhood in Catholic tradition. Costa Rica has a long and rich Catholic heritage, so this celebration of Mary was chosen to host the federal holiday.

Outside of Día de la Madre and the corresponding Saturday brunch, the week brings familiar events. Morning fitness and wellness are on the schedule for Monday and Wednesday as usual. Tuesday’s pop-up dinner is mediterranean tapas with Un Paseo por España, and Wednesday brings the Fresh Fish Market. Restaurant schedules will be as usual, with Movie Night on Playa Danta and Sunset Gin & Tonics at Santarena on Saturday to end of week.

For one last Día de la Madre treat, the team at Guanacaste Wildlife Monitoring has put together a compilation of all of the animal families that have been spotted since the wildlife tracking began in the reserve. ¡Feliz Día de la Madre!
